TamarahK began to go into labor at 1:38 am this morning, which she began like last year with lots of intense whining and with the great need of wanting to go outside to dig multiple fake dens, every two hours on the hour. We really believe that this is to help to bring the babies in position to be birthed and to hide where her real den is from other animals outside, she will pee in each spot after digging the hole. She continued to do this up to about 6:00 pm when she decided to come in and get in the whelping box. She wanted Dad to be in the box with her to give her back massages and T-touch. At about 6:45, she wanted Dad out of the box and Mom in the box with her as she settled in to get ready to have her babies. TamarahK is always a comfort queen and insisted having her puppies on her pregancy pillow and blankets.

Puppies started to arrive at 7:15 pm the first one was a female, the second arrived at 7:30 pm another female, and at 7:45 pm another arrived this time a male. She had a long break in the action and we really thought that mom was through having her babies when at a quarter to midnight she had one more, another female. Fraidy Mitten and Fearless Toes two of our cats stayed up on the box watched what was going on and slept through most of it. Timbuk2 the dad, Beckley and Wolfie stayed outside while the first three pups were born, came in to find that mom had puppies. TamarahK didn't allow Timbuk2 or Wolfie to view her babies at all, Beckley her son of last year was only allowed a few small peeks.

The babies were colicky all night, Tamarahk tried to comfort them but was having no success. Since I stay out in the living room with her in case Tamarahk and the babies need help, she looked at me as if to say HELP!! I went in the whelping box with her and massaged their little bellies and they were able to get some relief. TamarahK exhasted fell right asleep and let me the second mom take care of the babies, she and the rest of us have gotten so little sleep since she went into labor. I stayed in the box the rest of the night to help her with the puppies.

Since there are only the 4 pups, they are growing so quickly, there is not really any competion for food going on here. They have lots of energy and travel all over the whelping box exercising their little legs. It is unusual that the pups are moving around so far like this so early in their development.

Today is turkey dinner night, for Tamarahk and the rest of us. Turkey really helps her to get a deep sleep along with the puppies that seem to get some of what turkey has in her milk. She can now catch up on her rest. Day 5 she is and looks so much more rested. She is coming out of the box a lot more now to stretch and visit.
